John Addey biographical information is quoted directly from John's Astrologer's Memorial Page (accessible in WayBackMachine at the following link: Astrologers Memorial)

"JOHN ADDEY was an outstanding early leader in the ongoing effort to establish a general theory of astrology through advanced modern harmonics and intensive investigation of the symbolic basis of numbers. After World War II, he joined the Astrological Lodge of the Theosophical Society in England, and continued astrology studies that had begun while he was a college student working toward his Masters degree.

He later founded the prestigious Astrological Association, dedicated to furthering serious development of an integrated basis for astrology. Despite extensive attention given to the quantitative side, Addey's work was not simply materialistic. The principles of cycle and number that he developed through the study of harmonic effects have ancient roots in the mystical Greek philosopher, Pythagoras.

  • This lecture is best described in John's introductory remarks:

What I've tried to do was to lay bare the principles on which all Astrological Systems basically depend.

The principles which emerge, I think you'll will see are the basis of the signs of the zodiac, the houses of the horoscope, aspects, midpoints, anything else, you name it, it all comes back to harmonics of the circle and harmonics are simply divisions of the circle by whole numbers.

The hope is that as you see the harmonic basis of astrology, you'll begin to see not only where our present principles are drawn from but where for example the great diversity of traditions in India are drawn from, and you'll see also when you've seen the principles, what things are missing. Because you must remember that astrology has been handed down for centuries and inevitably in these circumstances it passes through periods where things get lost, or misplaced, or distorted.

And reviving astrology at the beginning of the 20th century, we were starting really with a tradition that had become rather ossified and had settled into set forms which were only part of the picture.

And so, what I am going to tell you about is this attempt to clarify the principles of Astrology.

And I'd rather that you looked upon this lecture and anything that follows from it as a kind of adventure in reclaiming and restoring astrology and putting back all of the elements that belong to it and getting them put together in the right way.

What I want you to do is just listen and soak it all up and try and get a picture of what Astrology is really like and what it's made of.
