Paul Kelley is a Philadelphia area native with a PhD in geography from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has mastered Level I of the NCGR-PAA professional astrologer certification process. He organizes the daylights out of women's casual clothing and designer jeans at a Nordstrom store in suburban Philadelphia and teaches lifelong learning classes in geography, literature, and astrology. He came to astrology later in life, having been marinated in the typical prejudices of an admirer of science and academia during his formative years.

Seeking direction after college, he purchased two astrology books, got a tape-recorded reading, and mail-ordered a chart interpretation from ACS. Fast forward to age 41. Paul began studying in earnest after a teaching position at Central Michigan University was cut in favor of a tenure track. Moving back east, he created lifelong learning courses, read astrology books, and began shaping his astrological community. He joined a newly reconstituted Philadelphia NCGR chapter in 2011 and served as Vice President for several years. In 2017, he was asked to create a class on Lilith, which he has since expanded and presented to multiple groups, including NCGR chapters in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Boston, and the Astrological Society of Princeton. In 2018, he first presented what has become a three-part lecture on Uranus and Taurus. He is currently working on a series of introductory astrology videos for the Foundations of Astrology playlist on NCGR's YouTube channel, NCGR - The Geocosmic. Paul is a member of the Boston chapter of NCGR.

  • Throughout history and across cultures, there has been a seductive, intemperate Lilith figure living on the fringes of conventional society. As the baby-stealing, husband-seducing, demon-birthing, screech-owl, night-wind bogeywoman, Lilith has served as a convenient hook for everything 'dark' and evil that patriarchal society has wanted to keep outside the city gates. And, as the uncompromisingly independent keeper of earth knowledge and diviner of the universe, she has once again become an archetypal feminine hero, standard bearer for the outcast, the not normal, the disruptors of the status quo, and the ones who really know which way the wind blows.

But who is Lilith - mythologically, symbolically, culturally, historically, astrologically, and astronomically? Why has she so successfully defied her exile by living in our cultural imaginations for so long? And what does an astrologer do with an asteroid, a point in the lunar orbit that can be measured in multiple ways, and a shadowy maybe-dust-cloud that all share the same name? Let me be clear: Lilith is as knowable an entity as Mars, Saturn, or the Moon, but first we need to find her.

In this lecture, Paul presents a chart-filled history of Lilith's use in astrology, instructions for placing her in your chart (assuming she lets you), her evolution as a cultural and mythological archetype, and suggestions for interpreting her that draw on themes common to all Lilith objects and points, while giving attention to the subtle shades of variation that distinguish them.
